What is a postpartum doula?

A Postpartum Doula is an experienced professional who offers physical, emotional, and informational support to families with a new baby. Doula services can result in less parental apprehension, exhaustion, and frustration in those early days after birth. This makes for a smoother transition to life with a new baby and long-lasting impacts on the whole family.

The doula's support is intended to fill the gaps left by modern day postpartum traditions, which usually include only medical procedures, baby’s checkups, and the purchase of baby-related paraphernalia.  A postpartum doula provides a sympathetic ear, encouragement, gentle education, and friendship.

The role of the doula is to help the family experience success in the pivotal postpartum journey and beyond. They do this with quiet, reassuring support for all family members. By dedicating themself to the family in this way, the doula validates and enhances the parents' intuitive ability to nurture. Their support encourages parents to become confident and to develop and implement their own parenting styles.
